Abendkonzerte
1 Jul 2008
As the sun slips away in Boerne, Texas on five summer Tuesday evenings, local residents and visitors from surrounding communities start making their way to Boerne's Main Plaza, bringing along their blankets, lawn chairs and ice chests. They are staking out their favorite spot before the Abendkonzerte begins.
Abendkonzerte is a series of five evening concerts featuring the Boerne Village Band, a German band that has been playing true old-country music for 141 consecutive years. In fact, it's the oldest German band in the country, and the oldest in the world outside of Germany.
Much of their repertoire is authentic old-style German compositions, with a few American classics added, and lots of oompah, oompah.
While most listeners like to sit or lay back and enjoy the music, you'll always find some polka fans who just can't keep from breaking into dance.
Children of all ages look forward to a rousing, flag-waving parade around the gazebo, and everybody joins in for a riotous "chicken dance" that has become an Abendkonzerte tradition.
The concerts are free, everyone is welcome, and food and beverages are usually available from various civic and youth organizations raising money for their projects.
