On Saturday, June 9 the Boerne Visitors Center hosted the first three in a series of twelve programs “Wings Over Boerne”, by The Birds of Prey Conservancy Last Chance Forever. Nearly 130 audience members were treated to an educational and moving tribute to the eagles, hawks, owls, falcons, and vultures that serve as ambassadors to teach the public and future generations about the importance of conservation regarding the earth and its natural resources.
Conservancy Director and Master Falconer John Karger delivers an interactive exhibition that incorporates staff members and flying and non-flying raptors. Knowledge of basic raptor biology and natural behaviors, insights into the plight of the natural world and the human effects in the balance of living things is shared in a conservation-themed program. His program is charged with a passionate effort to promote a common sense attitude towards the interaction of mankind and our environment. He believes that we can not appreciate and protect our wildlife heritage and environment without understanding our natural world. To that end, Last Chance Forever provides community education on the subject of raptors in the natural world, and our connection to them.
The demonstrations in this series were choreographed especially for the Boerne Visitors Center where spectators sit on the beautiful lawn at the historic Kingsbury House, under the lush canopy of two hundred year old live oaks. The magnificent raptors glide from branch to branch above your heads and after the flying demonstration the birds are put on display for up close viewing and great photographic opportunities. These educational programs are interactive, emotional, mixed with humor and are enjoyed by adults and children.
The Visitors Center is at 1407 S. Main, next to the Wal-Mart. Demonstrations are three times a day and begin at 11:00am, 1:00pm and 3:00pm, and last about 45 minutes. Remaining dates are June 16, 23 & 30. Snacks and refreshment s are available. Admission is free. Donations are welcomed. Feel free to bring chairs or blankets.
