Zebra Mussels Not Affecting Boerne Water Supply

News has been out about zebra mussels at Canyon Lake. While it is true that one of Boerne’s water sources is Canyon Lake, the water supply through our GBRA contract is not impacted.  A recent news story cites issues with another water utility known as Canyon Lake Water Supply Company. City of Boerne does not have any association with that company.  According to GBRA staff:

  • GBRA has instituted an active Zebra Mussel monitoring program in and around the Western Canyon intake facilities located in Canyon Reservoir.  This monitoring program has detected the presence of Zebra Mussels but no infestation on the intake facilities or the other water treatment plant components that in any way, diminishes the water conveyance and treatment capacities of the Western Canyon Project.
  • Furthermore, GBRA has engaged engineers and other specialists to insure we stay ahead of this issue.  GBRA has charged these specialists with determining what continuing measures, in conjunction with any new measures that could be implemented, will insure that Zebra Mussels do not become a water conveyance and treatment issue for the Western Canyon Project.

All of the drinking water in the Boerne Water Utility System is treated according to all state and federal requirements before it is delivered to your tap. To review the most recent water quality report click here.
