A Food-Centric Guide to Traveling in Boerne

Food-The-Dienger-Trading-Co-Coffee-Couple

Boerne shines with an abundance of culinary selections, so it's a no brainer when you are planning on eating your way through a vacation! We know trips are all about the food nowadays and the Boerne community is extending an invitation to their table for your next culinary getaway. Even though Boerne has German roots, you’ll find cuisine from around the world in settings from casual to chic and everything in between. Whether you are a longtime resident, or visiting Boerne for the first time your taste buds will sing!

DAY 1: Take it Easy Strolling Historic Main Street

• Spend your first day visiting the unique boutiques, shops and restaurants along historic Main Street, also known as the Hill Country Mile. The quaint Bear Moon Bakery and Café or The Dienger Trading Co. are perfect choices for pastries or hearty breakfasts with coffee. Both establishments are located in historic corner buildings and offer indoor and outdoor seating to casually sip your latte.

• Take your time visiting the many booths in the Corner Cartel and the stores in Olde Town, then head over to the Cibolo Creek Brewing Co. for lunch. Their menu features seasonal farm to market fare including soups, sandwiches, salads, burgers, charcuterie boards and craft beer.

• For those who like to shop with a culinary thought in mind you will not want to miss Kiss the Cook, Boerne Epicure Gourmet Market, Fickle Pickle and the Texas Gourmet Pantry. Your taste buds will thank you later!

• Indulge your passion for fashion when you browse the interesting collections of clothes and accessories in trendy boutiques such as Celeste, Boutique Chloe Rose, Alley on Main, Ella Blue, Daisy Pearl, The Dienger Trading Co. and Dang Sassy.

• The Cypress Grille offers both comfort and elegance for dinner. Your delicious choices include grilled pork chops, blackened sea scallops, pan-seared foie gras, fresh soups, salads, sandwiches, crispy oysters, delectable desserts and an extensive wine list.

DAY 2: Indulge Your Artistic Side

• Local art, folk art, fine art and more are featured in the many art galleries. However, you’ll need breakfast first, so head over to Little Gretel on River Road across from the Cibolo Trail and River Road Park for a traditional Czech kolache, amazing pecan pancakes or a hearty breakfast plate. This charming restaurant features German and Czech cuisine seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

• After breakfast, cross River Road and take a morning stroll along the Cibolo Trail hugging the Cibolo Creek and take in Art Al Fresco; an outdoor public art walking tour.

• Lunch at Boerne Epicure Gourmet Market offers a lovely outdoor patio in the heart of Boerne. Their homemade soups and handcrafted artisan sandwiches are to die for! Another very highly recommended lunch spot is the elegant Brantley’s 259 Bistro, where you can indulge in specialties such as quail or shrimp tacos, axis venison burger, lamb sliders, imaginative salads, and amazing apps like their loaded potato chips.

• Visit fine art galleries in the afternoon, such as Gallery 195, Carriage House Gallery and Texas Treasures Fine Art Gallery.

The Creek Restaurant is an enchanting dinner venue tucked along the Cibolo Creek near the Main Street Bridge. Dine al fresco on the gorgeous deck or inside the historic landmark building.

DAY 3: Venture Out to See the Sights

• Begin with breakfast where the locals eat—that often means breakfast tacos are on the menu. Visit Mague’s Café, Boerne Taco House or Mary's Tacos. Mary's Tacos was recently featured on The Day Tripper and is getting a lot of love from visitors lately!

• Planning on a late start to your Sunday morning? Make brunch at Peggy's on the Green a priority! Choices include indulgences like Softshell Crab Benedict, Sweet Roll French Toast, Shrimp and Grits, Sweet Potato Pancakes and an assortment of morning cocktails.

• Go underground when you enter Cascade Caverns or Cave Without a Name. Not far away, you’ll find great parks for hiking, bird watching, water play, outdoor photography and more: Kreutzberg Canyon Natural Area, Cibolo Nature Center, Joshua Springs Park and Preserve, James Kiehl River Bend Park, Boerne City Lake Park and Guadalupe River State Park.

• Lunch might be BBQ back in Boerne, and you can’t go wrong whether you choose Fritze’s BBQ, Klein Smokehaus or Smokey Mo's Bar B-Q . If something Italian is more to your liking, visit Broken Stone Pizza or Z's Woodfired Pizza. For award-winning burgers, try the Longhorn Café at the Old No. 9 Depot.

• Your afternoon adventure may take you into the Hill Country to visit wineries to sample commendable Texas wines. Singing Waters Vineyards, Sister Creek Vineyards, Newsom Vineyards and Bending Branch Winery are all in the Boerne and Comfort area.

• Your dinner destination is the Dodging Duck Brewhaus in Boerne. Relax on the covered deck or dine in one of the lake house-style dining rooms. The winner of numerous World Beer Championship medals, the Dodging Duck has their own unfiltered and unpasteurized craft beer on tap, of course. The dinner menu features everything from Thai lettuce wraps to chimichurri grilled beef tenderloin to bratwurst and sauerkraut. Salad fans LOVE their Heart of Boerne Salad!
