10 Reasons Why You Need Dickens On Main In Your Life This Thanksgiving Weekend

Whether Dickens on Main is a family tradition, or you’re brand new to the Hill Country’s biggest holiday celebration, here are 10 reasons you need to load up the family and head to Boerne this Thanksgiving weekend:

1. By Friday, you’ve been in the house with your whole family for days, and the evening neighborhood walks aren’t cutting it. Dickens on Main will have something everyone in your family will enjoy, and includes FREE ADMISSION and many free activities -- concerts, performances, kids crafts and lots of other fun entertainment in a vintage holiday setting. We’re an easy drive from San Antonio, Austin, New Braunfels, Kerrville and everywhere in between.

2. It’s the only time of the year you get to see snow and ride a sled with your kids. Where else will you shoot down a 60-foot ice slide or dance around in snow in South Texas?  Yes, the line to the slide gets long—use it for some q-time with the kids knowing the pure joy on their faces will make it worth the while.

3. You have to see the new stuff at Dickens every year. And LIVE REINDEER should be number one on the list for 2017!  Located at the A Little Nature Store, the new Reindeer Village will have photo opps of Santa’s favorite guides and also hosts an exotic petting zoo.  Also new, KENS 5’s Bill Taylor will be live on Main Street Friday night collecting unwrapped toys for kids in need through his Bill’s Elves initiative.

4. You aren’t getting up at 2 a.m. to fight an angry crowd for a 60-inch television, but want to get some shopping done. Downtown Boerne, known as the Hill Country Mile, is home to some of the most unique shops in the area, and they’ll be open late and stocked to the brim with gifts hard to find anywhere else.

5. You know the REAL Santa is always at Dickens, not the mall. Enough said. If you’re a Dickens loyal, please note that Santa’s Workshop/Santa’s Village has been moved to The Flower Shop on the south end of the event!

6. You need a family Christmas card photo, quick. In addition to tons of “Christmasy” backdrops throughout Dickens, visit the photo booth in the gazebo in North Pole Village to get a free photo with a customized Dickens backdrop. Your emailed photo can be shared immediately on social media and even comes with an option to order holiday cards that are delivered right to your door!

7. Tickets to every holiday performance are sold out. Not to worry, Dickens features free performances of every kind, including Bah Humbug: A One-man Christmas Carol, magic and fun from Tobias the Adequate, tiny ballerinas and more!

8. It’s 5 months until Fiesta, and you NEED a turkey leg. And a funnel cake. And a beer. Every kind of food truck and vendor you can think of are placed all over the Dickens venue. From mini donuts to sausage on a stick, your “fair food” cravings will be satisfied. If a sit-down dinner is more your style, there are several restaurants to choose from, like Cibolo Creek Brewing Co.Cypress GrillePeggy’s on the Green and more. Check out for a complete list!

9. Your music preferences are all over the map, so you want to sing to Journey, but chill to some folk music too. Does your playlist have a serious identity crisis? Then you’re in the right place! Live music is on the main stage in North Pole Plaza both nights, including Groove Knight, known for the wide range of favorite covers and Willow City, a sibling quartet of folk singers well on their way to stardom. A full schedule of events and performances can be found at

10. You’re into chainsaws. After going to Dickens, your holidays will never be complete without chainsaws and ice! Watch amazing artists battle it out – creating your favorite holiday icons from huge blocks of ice using some serious equipment, all to the soundtrack of hard rock n’ roll classics.

The Dickens on Main tradition continues this Thanksgiving weekend, November 24 and 25, with entertainment and activities scheduled until 10 p.m. each night. Shops along the Mile will take part in Black Friday as well as Small Business Saturday, offering great deals and unique gifts you won’t find in any big box, and open at 10 a.m.—so come early and plan to stay late!
